John Matthew Sobrato
Director, Impact & Learning
John is part of the third generation of Sobrato family members working within Silicon Valley and is currently the Director of Impact and Learning. Serving in a cross-functional capacity, he supports all Sobrato Philanthropies’ program areas through monitoring, evaluation, and learning – seeking to drive insights and better understand the organization’s impact within the world without burdening grantee partners or communities. He is deeply committed to continuing the Sobrato family’s philanthropic leadership as well as increasing equity and access to opportunities for communities throughout the Bay Area and beyond.
Before joining Sobrato Philanthropies in the spring of 2022, John worked as a classroom teacher and an administrator at high schools in East Side San Jose for nearly ten years. After transitioning out of a role focused on education, John spent time serving on nonprofit boards. This included the Sobrato Philanthropies Board, the Board of the Foundation for Hispanic Education, the Ignatian Center Advisory Board at Santa Clara University, and serving in the Board Chair role for the SEAL Organization. He holds a B.S. from Santa Clara University in both History and Political Science.
